In order to offer the finest services that will maximize inpatient and outpatient recovery efforts, our rehabilitation team plays a continuing and integral part in overall patient care. Indeed, our therapists are employees, not contract workers, so you can be assured of the most committed and consistent treatment available.
Our therapists routinely work with other health care professionals to assist patients in overcoming the effects of injury and disease of the neurological, musculoskeletal, pulmonary, orthopedic and cardiovascular systems. They also use their skills to help patients prevail over functional declines that may have occurred after surgery. Their goal is to restore independent functioning as quickly as possible, and to facilitate a speedy return to home using an intensive, multidisciplinary treatment approach.
Types of therapy offered
at Whitehall Boca Raton:
Physical therapy involves a dynamic hands-on approach that helps patients return home with confidence in their ability to safely perform everyday activities. Each patient’s program is individualized by certified physical therapists to take advantage of the most appropriate procedures that will help the individual achieve his or her highest level of function.
Therapists work with patients to assist them in progressive ambulation, basic and advanced transfers, and functional bed mobility. Treatment sessions also incorporate exercises to help increase patient strength, endurance and balance, as well as aid in pain management. But because therapists also understand the value of family involvement, they additionally educate caregivers so that once patients return home, they can properly continue the techniques learned in therapy. Read details on physical therapy and see a video. Former patients have frequently stated that therapy makes them “feel whole again.” (Back to Top)
Occupational Therapy takes a holistic individualized approach focusing on regaining important “life skills” that have been impaired or lost due to illness, injury or disability. These activities include treatment focused on self-care, bathing, grooming, feeding, dressing, toileting, safe transfers and household mobility. Therapeutic exercises are included to provide strength, endurance and balance skills.
Basic home management skills as well as community re-entry is addressed prior to returning home. Before discharge, a licensed occupational therapist can assess the patient's home to establish safety, equipment and modification needs. Family and/or caregiver training and education are provided and encouraged to ensure a safe and smooth transition home. (Back to Top)
Speech and Language therapists work with patients to restore a variety of skills. Therapists assist patients with regaining their ability to express wants and needs and to understand others
to enhance communication. Therapists also aid patients with re-establishing their ability to recall information, problem solve, and sequence effectively to maximize independence with daily activities.
Additionally, therapists help patients regain or improve their swallow function to increase safety while consuming food and liquid. State of the art equipment is also used to help in the process.
Patient, family and/or caregiver training are provided to ensure patient safety with all compensatory swallowing and food preparation techniques prior to discharge. Respiratory therapists provide a wide range of pulmonary care techniques twenty-four hours a day, including the use of medical gas (such as oxygen), testing of the cardiopulmonary system with pulse oximetry, and monitoring breathing volumes and pressures. Supportive ventilation is provided as well. Other therapies include postural drainage, chest percussion, breathing exercises, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the maintenance of natural, artificial and mechanical airways. We also have a specific Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program particularly suited for patients in need of weaning from ventilator dependency. (Back to Top)
The restorative rehabilitation program at Whitehall works to promote the resident’s ability to function independently. The focus is to achieve and maintain optimal physical, social and functional well-being. The restorative rehabilitation program consists of a specially trained team of certified nursing assistants who provide residents with skill practice and education in activities of daily living including, but not limited to, walking, transfers, dressing, grooming, eating and swallowing, and range of motion/strengthening exercises.
All activities are done under the direction of a licensed therapist and each program is designed to specifically meet the needs of individual residents. In addition, each program is reviewed monthly by a licensed speech, physical, or occupational therapist to verify it is meeting the individual resident’s needs. Through the restorative program, residents are given individualized, personal attention to achieve their highest level of functional independence. (Back to Top)
Recreation can and should be fun, but the value in therapeutic recreation goes far beyond mere enjoyment. In fact, the overriding point of therapeutic recreation is to combine treatment, education and recreation services to help patients with illnesses, disabilities and other conditions develop and use leisure to enhance their health, functional abilities, coping mechanisms, independence and quality of life.
We are diligent in appropriately tailoring individual therapeutic activities. Patients’ abilities are evaluated to design a program that targets their individual strengths in a way that bolsters their confidence and accomplishments, rather than their impairments. Our programs are created to suit all residents, whether an individual can participate in robust group activities, or requires gentle, one-on-one stimulation such as prayer, conversation, or reading.
We’ve even brought therapeutic recreation to the outdoors, primarily through our
tropical garden which includes horticultural activities to stimulate the senses, walkways for casual strolling, a cabana for enjoying the outside environment and more. We even have a putting green for residents who enjoy golf and wish to enhance their recovery by using the green to improve their stamina, balance, and other motor skills. As you might imagine, that’s an ideal program for someone who may have had a hip replacement or is recovering from a similar situation. (Back to Top)
